This week, our new grace ambassador, Jordan Gray interviewed 2021 Olympic trials qualifier, Maddie Nickal. Maddie competes in the heptathlon and is an All-American athlete. She engaged in dialogue with Jordan about how her faith has grown through her athletics career.
Maddie explained to Jordan how she grew up in a christian home, regularly attended church and prayed daily, but it wasn’t until she went to college at Penn State University that she had to choose for herself to build a relationship with God. Maddie said “When you go to college, you have to choose that faith for yourself.” She continued by saying that this decision was made easy since she was invited to go to a bible study group with some teammates.
Through injuries and other setbacks, Maddie learned that she was able to learn of her worth off the track. She said “Whether you’re standing at the top of the podium or sitting on the bench, I know that I am loved.” She explained that this has been a relief since she has been able to see how God loves her, even when she is injured or not performing her best.
Maddie mentioned how through the pandemic, her faith helped her to see the positive things in her life. She said “Something good is going to come from this. I don’t know what it is, but something good will come. That’s all I know because God has always taken care of us.” While she was still disappointed about her season coming to a halt, she was able to see how something good could come from the pandemic.
She ended the live with Jordan by talking about pursuing a masters degree in nutrition. Maddie has found a passion in finding recipes that help her feel her best. She explained the reason she wants to help others with their nutrition goals is because she wants to help people to feel their best. Maddie also believes that by making healthy choices, we can serve God to the best of our ability.
